Apple this evening has shared a new video offering a look into the development process that led to the creation of the Portrait Lighting feature on iPhone X. The video shows how Apple used the “art of portraiture” to come up with the technology…

Apple explains that it worked with photographers and image makers to study lighting principles and advanced machine learning to create the Portrait Lighting feature. In the video, you see Apple working to create a picture in a professional studio with professional equipment, and then recreating it using just the iPhone X.

Apple also showcases Portrait Lighting with the front-facing camera on the iPhone X, which lets users take killer pictures of themselves without anyone's help.

We studied the art of portraiture from paintings to photographs. We worked global image makers and the world’s best photographers, combing timeless lighting principles with advanced machine learning, to create an iPhone that takes studio-quality portraits without the studio.

Apple's marketing for the iPhone X has highlighted Portrait Lighting in the past. The company touts that Portrait Lighting allows users to create “dramatic lighting effects” on their iPhones. The feature, exclusive to the iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X, is still in “Beta” mode with improvements happening over time.
