Apple’s Discontinued MagSafe Battery Pack Doesn’t Just Stick to iPhones Now

We all miss Apple’s MagSafe Battery Pack and want to see it return. In the meantime, the old magnetic battery accessory has resurfaced in an unlikely place.

Apple introduced MagSafe as part of the iPhone 12 lineup, mainstreaming magnetically attached accessories and vastly improving wireless charging performance with precision alignment.

MagSafe Battery Pack was easily the best demonstration of both advancements in one product.

But when Apple moved the iPhone from its Lightning connector to standard USB-C, MagSafe Battery Pack didn’t make the same charging port transition. Instead, Apple stopped selling it.

More recently, Apple has been rumored to be working on an updated version.

The rumor is that Apple is considering a new MagSafe Battery Pack to help improve battery life on the rumored iPhone 17 Air.

Apple is expected to reveal the iPhone 17 Air on September 9, and the thinnest iPhone ever isn’t expected to have the greatest battery life.

Before that happens, the internet has been served a rather cursed sight to see.

Thanks to Apple donating MagSafe as the foundation for the Qi2 wireless charging standard, it turns out MagSafe Battery Pack snaps onto Google’s new Pixel 10 Pro.

Google brands its Qi2 implementation as PixelSnap, and it means accessories once limited to iPhone now attach to rival devices.

The same is probably true for all the MagSafe batteries made for iPhone these days, but seeing the old Apple-branded one on the back of a Google phone is a little unsettling.

My ideal Apple MagSafe Battery Pack would include a USB-C port and wireless charging for juicing up its own battery from a MagSafe charger. Perhaps future versions could even automatically launch Apple’s Move to iOS app when attached to Android phones.
