Apple Rolls Out Revised Third macOS Sonoma Developer Beta

Apple has issued a revised version of the third developer beta of macOS 14 Sonoma, ahead of a potential public beta release.

Developers signed up for the program can access the latest build by either visiting the Apple Developer Center or updating their Macs to the newest beta software. For public users, beta versions are normally made available through the Apple Beta Software Program after the developer versions are released.

Tuesday's beta is not the fourth, but is in fact a reissuing of the third developer beta. Apple has not disclosed why it's an update rather than a completely new beta generation, but it is likely to be due to small changes rather than introducing new feature changes.

The updated third beta follows the original third beta from June 10, the second was issued on June 21, while the first arrived right after its introduction at WWDC on June 5.

The updated third build is number 23A5286i, replacing the previous one, build number 23A5286g.

The changes Apple is introducing in macOS Sonoma includes screensavers that resemble those of the Apple TV, complete with a smooth fade-away when turned off. A clock can also be superimposed on the screensaver, as well as on the Mac lock screen.

Widgets are added to the desktop, which includes a picker dialog, automatic dimming and transparency, color changes to match wallpapers, and even the adding of iPhone widgets.

AppleInsider and Apple strongly suggest users don't install beta operating systems or other beta software on "mission-critical" or primary devices, as there is the small chance of issues that could result in the loss of data. Testers should instead use secondary or non-essential hardware and ensure they have sufficient backups of their critical data at all times.
