App Store Will Soon Show Summary of App Reviews Made by Users

One of the new features of Apple Intelligence is the summarization of texts and notifications. Now it seems that Apple wants to bring summarization to another place: the App Store. Soon, you’ll be able to see a summary of app reviews made by users before downloading an app.

App Store to summarize user reviews for each app

As seen by 9to5Mac in an unlisted App Store article, Apple has developed a new system that will use all user reviews on the App Store to create a summary highlighting “the most common customer feedback” about each app. According to the article, the summaries will be updated every time new reviews are added.

There’s no clear example of exactly what these App Store summaries will look like, but presumably they’ll be displayed on the app page along with the app description and screenshots. It also seems that Apple will generate these summaries online on its own rather than using some kind of local processing.

The idea is to make it easier for users to identify when an app doesn’t deliver what it promises in the App Store. Since these summaries will be auto-generated, Apple says developers will be able to report when they consider a summary to be “inaccurate.”

  • An app may have a summary that highlights the most common customer feedback and sentiment in user reviews about the app. The summaries are refreshed as new reviews are added. Summaries are available in select countries and regions and for apps with enough reviews to provide a summary. They appear on the app’s product page. If the summary is inaccurate or has another issue, you can report a problem.

Summaries will show up when an app has a certain number of reviews and will be available in “select countries and regions.” There are no details on when exactly the new feature will go live, but given that it can already be found in the App Store API, we assume it will happen very soon.

Apple also points out that it is constantly removing reviews and ratings from the App Store that are considered fraudulent. In 2023, the company processed more than 1.1 billion reviews and removed around 152 million fraudulent reviews.
