With Apple’s September event just one week away, more details about the highly anticipated iPhone Ultra, Apple’s first foldable iPhone, are emerging.
In a new interview with Tom’s Guide, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman shared several additional details about the iPhone Ultra, including its display sizes, MagSafe support, durability, multitasking features, launch timing, and expected price.
iPhone Ultra Display and Chip Specifications
According to Gurman, the iPhone Ultra is expected to feature two displays:
●5.5-inch cover display
●7.8-inch inner foldable display
The device is also expected to use Apple’s latest Pro-series chip along with its latest modem, although specific chip and modem names have not yet been confirmed.
MagSafe Will Be Supported
MagSafe support had recently become a question mark for Apple's foldable iPhone, but Gurman says the feature is expected to be included.
This means the iPhone Ultra should support MagSafe accessories and wireless charging, maintaining compatibility with Apple's existing MagSafe ecosystem.
iPhone Ultra Could Have a Nearly Crease-Free Display
The foldable iPhone is also rumored to feature a significantly reduced display crease.
Gurman clarified that the crease will not completely disappear, but Apple is reportedly aiming for a result comparable to the latest Samsung foldable smartphones. The device could potentially offer an even less noticeable crease thanks to its new hinge design.
Apple is also said to be using a liquid metal hinge, with durability being a major focus during development.
Apple Is Prioritizing Foldable iPhone Durability
Unlike some existing foldable smartphones, Apple reportedly wants the iPhone Ultra to be as durable as, or close to, other iPhone models.
The hinge and overall durability have apparently been major areas of development, suggesting Apple is putting significant effort into making its first foldable iPhone suitable for everyday use.
iOS 27 Could Bring iPad-Style Multitasking
The iPhone Ultra may also introduce new software capabilities designed specifically for its larger internal display.
According to Gurman, iOS 27 will support more iPad-like multitasking features, including side-by-side apps and more flexible on-screen layouts.
Users could also be able to drag and drop content between multiple apps, making it easier to move text, images, files, and other information from one app to another.
These features could make the foldable iPhone feel more like a combination of an iPhone and a compact tablet.
iPhone Ultra Launch Date Is Expected to Be Close to iPhone 18 Pro
Despite previous rumors of major delays, Gurman expects the iPhone Ultra launch to take place around the same time as Apple's new Pro iPhone models.
The foldable iPhone could either launch alongside the new Pro models or arrive within a few weeks of them. Gurman does not expect a major delay pushing the device to late October or November due to supply chain problems.
iPhone Ultra Price Could Start Above $2,000
The biggest downside may be the price.
Gurman once again expects the iPhone Ultra price to start at more than $2,000, making it significantly more expensive than Apple's current iPhone lineup.
With a large inner display, new hinge technology, premium hardware, and foldable design, Apple appears to be positioning the iPhone Ultra as an entirely new high-end product category.
iPhone Ultra: What We Know So Far
With Apple's September event approaching, the iPhone Ultra is shaping up to be one of the company's biggest hardware launches in years. A 5.5-inch cover display, 7.8-inch inner display, MagSafe support, improved durability, iPad-style multitasking, and a premium $2,000+ price tag could make Apple's first foldable iPhone a major new addition to the iPhone lineup.
More details are expected to be revealed when Apple officially unveils the device at its September event.
