Intel Macs are not going away overnight, but their third-party software support is entering a new phase.

Apple now allows eligible universal apps on the Mac App Store that require macOS 13 or later to drop support for Intel-based Macs. Developers can choose this option to streamline maintenance and reduce app package sizes by focusing solely on Apple silicon.

For Intel Mac users, this does not mean existing apps will suddenly stop working. If a developer chooses to drop Intel support, existing users can still run the last compatible version on their machines, though they will no longer receive future updates or new features.

Alongside this update for developers, Apple is also finalizing its silicon transition at the system level. On September 1, Apple announced that macOS 27 will be the final macOS release to include Rosetta—the translation layer enabling Apple silicon Macs to run legacy Intel-only apps.

For now, Intel Mac owners can continue using their devices as usual. However, as developers gradually focus on Apple silicon, keeping an eye on app compatibility will become increasingly important for users planning their next workflow updates.
