While many of the iOS 27 rumors have focused on Apple Intelligence, Siri, and performance – there’s a plethora of upgrades reportedly coming to the Camera app, building on top of the redesign that we saw last year with iOS 26. There’ll also be a number of new AI-enhanced editing tools coming to the Photos app.

Customizable camera UI

Right now, the Camera app interface is pretty fixed in place, with controls only being exposed as needed – and the rest being tucked away in a menu. With iOS 27, Apple will be allowing users to adjust what controls are shown, and you’ll be able to make the app fit your needs better. From Bloomberg:

●Apple Inc. is planning to upgrade its Camera app, making the software fully customizable as part of a broader set of user interface changes coming in its next iPhone software update.

●With the new approach, users will be able to choose which features appear in the Camera app — and where they’re placed. That includes controls for flash, exposure, the timer and resolution, according to people with knowledge of the matter.

These changes are apparently part of an effort to make the Camera app better suited for professionals – with new advanced options being added to the Camera app. The controls toggle, currently available in the top right, will also be moved to the right of the shutter button, per Mark Gurman.

Visual Intelligence upgrades

This set of changes is two fold. First, Apple will be integrating Visual Intelligence in the Camera app, in the form of a new Siri mode. This’ll expose Visual Intelligence to far more users, which is primarily accessible in a separate app behind Camera Control. Users can also choose to add it to Control Center or map it to their Action Button.

Second, Apple will be adding a few new capabilities to Visual Intelligence. This’ll include the ability to scan food nutrition labels to log what you’re eating, and scan contact information, such as a business card, to quickly create new contacts.

New editing tools in Photos

Building upon the Clean Up tool introduced in iOS 18, Apple will be adding three new AI-enhanced editing tools in iOS 27: Extend, Enhance, and Reframe.

Extend is sort of like the generative fill tool in Photoshop. Users will be able to “generate additional content beyond the original frame,” per Bloomberg. Enhance, on the other hand, will make your photos pop a little more, with improved color, lighting, and image quality. The last feature, Reframe, is meant to help users shift perspective of a spatial photo after the picture is taken.

There is one caveat, though. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Extend and Reframe “don’t perform reliably,” and there’s a possibility of the features being delayed or scaled back before a public release. That means that these features might not be unveiled at WWDC 2026. If they are, the company might delay them for a later developer beta, or possibly even iOS 27.1 or later.
