New AirTag 2 Is Coming Very Soon with These Rumored Features

Apple’s biggest event of the year is happening on September 9. New products expected include the iPhone 17 line, AirPods Pro 3, and Apple Watch Ultra 3. But signs point to another highly anticipated product likely making an appearance: Apple’s new AirTag 2 is coming soon.

AirTag 2 expected to launch this fall, possibly as early as September

Apple had a busy product launch season at the start of the year, with the M4 MacBook Air, iPhone 16e, and more debuting. And it’s about to enter an even busier time for new hardware.

But one long-rumored product that hasn’t yet arrived is AirTag 2.

Following years without a hardware successor, the new AirTag is finally expected to launch soon.

Here’s what Mark Gurman reported earlier this summer:

The new AirTag is nearly ready, having been prepared for launch over the past several months

Originally we were expecting a debut around the middle of this year. But that time has come and gone

Sources indicate Apple is now targeting a September debut alongside the iPhone 17.

Though the keynote will no doubt be packed as-is, AirTag 2 makes a lot of sense to announce then because it’s commonly seen as an iPhone accessory.

In other words, there’s a very good chance we’ll see AirTag 2 on September 9.

New features rumored for AirTag 2

Will the new AirTag be worth waiting for? Or should you buy the current AirTag now?

Here are the main new features that have been rumored:

  • More modern Ultra Wideband chip, likely the 2nd gen version from iPhone 15
  • Precision finding with greater range
  • Improved focus on privacy, including making the speaker harder to remove

Per Mark Gurman, AirTag 2 will “look similar to the current model,” so don’t expect a big design change.

Apple may have some other updates in the works, but so far this is everything we’re expecting.
