Tim Cook Donated Nearly $5 Million Worth of Apple Shares to Charity

According to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing today, Apple CEO Tim Cook donated over 23,000 Apple shares to an unspecified charity. Those shares, based on the closing price of Apple stock today, are valued at nearly $5 million.

As spotted by Business Insider, Cook gifted 23,215 shares of directly owned AAPL stock to charity. Based on today’s closing price of $215.04, those shares would be valued at $4,992,154. Though, it’s unclear when exactly the shares were converted, so that amount could vary slightly.

Corporate leaders are not required to publicly report the recipient of a charitable donations, but rather only have to disclose the act of the transfer. Thus, we don’t know the charity to which Cook donated the nearly $5 million.

In the past, Tim Cook has made personal donations to several charities. For instance, in 2014 he donated to an LGBT equality campaign across Alabama, Arkansas, and Mississippi. In 2015, he made a similar AAPL stock donation to an undisclosed charity.

In a 2015 interview, Cook said he plans to give away all of his wealth through a “systematic approach” to giving. At the time, he said he had started donating money “quietly,” but did not reveal details.

Currently, Cook controls 878,425 shares of AAPL – worth over $199,896,500 million. As part of his donation today, he did not sell any shares to his benefit.
