When you are a company as big as Apple, you are bound to be the subject of a new controversy or lawsuit every other week. This time around, Apple is facing a lawsuit from Omni MedSci claiming that the former has infringed on its patented heart rate sensor technology which is used on the Apple Watch.

In the lawsuit, Omni MedSci claims that it met with Apple between 2014 to 2016 regarding discussions about a partnership. However, Apple ultimately decided to end the discussion, and as per Omni’s claims, went ahead and used its patented technology in the heart rate scanner of the Apple Watch.

Thus, Omni MedSci is now claiming in its lawsuit filed in the Eastern District of Texas that Apple willfully infringed on its patents and wants an injunction against the company along with damages.

Omni MedSci is owned by Mohammed Islam and can be best described as a patent troll. In total, Mohammed Islam runs over six companies and owns over 150 patents. These are shell companies in disguise that are used to acquire patents. Then, Islam uses these patents to sue companies that use any such similar technology in their products. Using this technique, Islam has already filed lawsuits against Huawei, Nokia, Siemens, Fujitsu, and others.

It has now been over three years since Apple first launched the Apple Watch with a heart rate scanner. If the Cupertino company would have been genuinely infringing on the technology by Omni MedSci, the lawsuit would have come arrived much earlier.
