Apple's CEO, Tim Cook, hasn't really been shying away from expressing his interest in having augmented reality (AR) as part of their plans for the company. However, the Apple head honcho has now expressed his take on how AR would likely become a revolutionary step that would further elevate the smartphone as an integral part of people's lives.

Cook recently mentioned in an interview with The Independent that he actually thinks that AR will be a big thing, similar to that of the smartphone. The CEO even went as far as comparing its impact to the world as being similar to that of the first iPhone. This is a big statement from the head of one of the world's leading tech companies, as it may indicate that Apple may have big plans for the technology moving forward.

Tim Cook Reveals AR Will Have Same Impact As iPhone For Consumers

While other companies, like Samsung, have been pursuing virtual reality (VR) applications, Apple is likely going the other route and developing products based on AR. Cook didn't really comment when he was asked if the upcoming new iPhone, the iPhone 8, would be coming with any AR capabilities. His take on AR tech's impact on the smartphone industry may provide a clue for their plans, but it isn't quite clear just yet if the upcoming new iPhone will be part of it.

Unlike VR, AR actually superimposes images and graphics on top of real-world objects. The technology is virtually unlimited in its applications and several companies have already managed to showcase some of them.

Microsoft's Hololens technology is one of the biggest names in AR today, with the device already showing how the technology could be applied to increase productivity and synergy. Nintendo's previously released "Pokémon Go" video game, also managed to showcase how AR can be applied to video games as well. There is literally an infinite number of ways for the technology to be used in everyday life, and now that Apple has expressed their interest in exploring it, it probably won't be long until AR becomes part of people's lives.
